Criminal Intent Update: Down 1, Still Not Quite Renewed…

And the wacky wild roller coaster ride of Law & Order: Criminal Intent continues. Reports on the internet seem to indicate that Julianne Nicholson will not be returning to Criminal Intent. Nicholson played Detective Wheeler who was partnered with Chris Noth’s Detective Logan and then switched to Jeff Goldblum’s Detective Nichols. Saffron Burrows, which some might remember from either Boston Legal or My Own Worst Enemy, is rumored to be in the running for the new position. USA is still reportedly in the process of finalizing the deal to renew Criminal Intent for its 9th season; however Goldblum’s return is not 100% guaranteed yet and D’onofrio and Erbe are supposedly in talks to return “in some capacity”.

Read the article here:

It’s probably too soon to start any sort of official complaining on this matter, being that nothing is official, but far be it from me to pass up a great opportunity to start complaining. I have no idea why Nicholson opted not to return, but I would imagine it has something to do with the 2 children she has given birth to in the past couple years; so I can’t really blame her for leaving. As for Saffron Burrows, I suppose it doesn’t really matter, because her job will simply be to exist and put up with Goldblum’s character. However, I wasn’t exactly enthralled with her character on Boston Legal and I can’t help but wonder if there’s not a better option out there. I will say that some of Goldblum’s best episodes happened when Eames joined the party as his partner.

As for the other comments in the article, I will try to  hold my breath on. It would be a shame if they had to replace Goldblum already, considering he’s only done about 8 episodes of the show, and each one was getting better. As for the comment that Erbe and D’onofrio (Eames and Goren) are looking to return “in some capacity”, any capacity less than what they have been doing would be a catastrophic disaster. I already feel like they’re never on, it’d be a shame to put them on less. It’d be nice if they could merge the show back together, instead of doing this stupid split episode thing they’ve been stuck on since season 5. All the actors in Special Victims Unit don’t work every single episode, but they don’t make it a habit to have an alternating pattern of Stabler/Benson and Munch/Tutuola.

Needless to say, this information doesn’t exactly fill me with hope for Criminal Intent, but I shall continue to cross my fingers and hope this doesn’t suck too badly.
